Dr Rahul Bhargava

Dr Rahul Bhargava is Principal Director and Chief of Hematology, Hemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, India's first integrated Centre of Excellence in Hematology, Pediatric Hematology & Stem Cell Transplant. With over 24 years of leadership in the field, he has performed more than 2,500 stem cell transplants, a record achievement in North India.

He completed his MBBS and MD in Medicine at Barkatullah University, Bhopal, followed by senior residency in the Department of Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He completed his DM at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and a post-DM fellowship in Leukemia & Bone Marrow Transplant at Vancouver Hospital, Canada, where he received specialized training in voluntary stem cell transplant and umbilical cord transplant.

Dr Bhargava has been a pioneering force in advancing BMT procedures in India. He began his stem cell transplant work at Medanta in 2010, where he performed India's first haploidentical bone marrow transplant that same year. In 2016, he became the first Indian doctor to perform and popularize stem cell transplants for multiple sclerosis.

He has established 10 low-cost BMT centres across India, including at Sarvodaya Hospital, Batra Hospital and Action Balaji Hospital, actively participating in government initiatives to make BMT therapy accessible with the goal of an India free of anaemia and thalassemia. Under his leadership, Fortis Memorial Research Institute has become a major referral centre for transplants related to thalassemia, leukemia and lymphoma. He treats patients from across the world, including from Africa, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iraq.

Dr Bhargava has received the Award for Excellence in Hematology and Stem Cell Transplant from Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, and the Best Doctor Award from Six Sigma Star Healthcare.
